God of War Ragnarok concluded the series’ Norse saga in a hugely satisfying way – but we’re not done yet. PlayStation Studios has just announced a God of War Laufey game that stars Kratos’ wife, Faye (formerly known as Laufey), and gave her quite the introduction. We were treated to about 20 minutes of gameplay that seemed to happen right from the start of the game.
The images started out more or less the same way as the 2018 ones. God of Warwith Kratos placing Faye’s body on a burning pyre and bidding her farewell alongside their son Atreus. Faye then wakes up somewhere else entirely and appears to be aware of the events that have occurred. She remarks that she saw the pyre and knew that Kratos and Atreus were beginning their journey (from the aforementioned game). She then begins traveling through a completely unknown realm that we haven’t seen until now, engaging in classic God of War battles, although Faye obviously plays very differently than Kratos or Atreus.
Eventually, a lengthy cutscene shows Faye being captured by a new set of enemies that, again, look nothing like most of what we’ve seen in the Nordic series. A new character, the “cosmic cube” Phranque calls it the afterlife of the Gods. (The PlayStation Blog specifies that this is the Everywhen, a place where gods from all mythologies vie for power.) Some of the minions holding Faye captive resemble undead enemies from previous games, but the overall setting seems almost completely unfamiliar.
The preview ends with Faye attempting to use her magic to successfully escape imprisonment – but this puts her in the middle of a large-scale battle where she gets her hands on an awesome weapon that, at first glance, seems just as cool as the Blades of Chaos or the Leviathan Axe. It’s a gorgeous blade that she can throw and retrieve for some delightful and clever combat options, not unlike the aforementioned weapons from previous games. Attached to the blade are sensitive ribbons named Rue which are intended to prevent the sword from being lost to enemies.
Naturally, a brutal one-on-one battle ensues, showing the full extent of her powers as well as the villainy of those in the new kingdom she’s stuck in.
Rumors have been circulating for a while now about a game featuring Faye, but it was unclear where exactly it might fit into the God of War timeline. Seeing Faye experience a new journey that unfolds alongside the events Kratos and Atreus are facing is certainly an intriguing twist.
Unfortunately, we haven’t had any idea of a release window, so we’re looking at 2027 at the earliest for this one. Axes and swords crossed to make this happen. For now, at least, there are several videos besides the main gameplay reveal that explore the new cast and development process for this title.
