Quantic Dream stops its MOBA spellcaster chronicles

It has struggled to compete with games like League of Legends and Dota.

Quantic Dream closes its online multiplayer battle arena Spellcaster Chronicles after an early access period of several months. The company says the game “did not reach the audience needed to ensure its long-term stability.”

That’s an understatement. According to the SteamDB database, only 23 players are currently enjoying the game. For reference, the hit MOBA Dota 2 currently has nearly 550,000 players.

It seems the company is trying to do right by players before the servers shut down for good on June 19. Any money spent during the early access period will be refunded upon request. Keep an eye on the official Discord page for relevant next steps.

Quantic Dream stated that the discontinuation of Spellcaster Chronicles will also require “an internal reorganization”. This reminds me of layoffs. The company noted, however, that it is “fully committed to managing this transition with fairness, care and respect, and will prioritize internal reallocations wherever possible to support our other productions.”

The company promises that this decision has no impact on the production of the next narrative adventure Star Wars Eclipse. That’s good to know, considering we got our first trailer for this game almost five years ago.

Quantic Dream is the company behind narrative games like Heavy rain And Beyond: two souls. These are story-driven titles that emphasize player choice. Given that the company’s games are known for their slow, methodical gameplay, a fast-paced MOBA was probably always doomed to failure.
