Images purporting to show the inside of an Apple-made AI server believed to power Private Cloud Compute surfaced online this week, offering a first look at the hardware’s configuration.
The images were shared earlier this week by user X @hsuchingpo, an account with a history of leaking Apple hardware and prototypes. Captioned simply “Apple M5 Server,” the leaker said the hardware is “most likely” Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system. Private Cloud Compute is Apple’s system for offloading demanding Apple Intelligence queries from a device to the cloud while preventing user data from being stored or shared.
The images show a rack-mountable chassis containing compute modules. Each features a separate circuit board mounted on a support bar and secured with blue and red ejector latches for quick removal. The cards connect to a backplane via gold-edged connectors, with heatsinks running through the center of each column and a service diagram taped inside the cover mapping the cards’ numbered positions and Apple part numbers.
Each chassis can hold up to 32 cards. The layout appears to be built around airflow, with heatsinks in the center and fans at both ends.
A close-up image shows a board with its thermal paste wiped off, revealing an Apple logo printed directly onto a chip package, appearing to confirm that the hardware uses Apple’s own silicon. There are two NAND flash chips nearby.
The leaker added that the server cannot handle its own workload independently. In the responses, they explained that the hardware “requires use in conjunction with Mac Studio (performs software control function)” and that other than Apple, no one can enable it, as it requires both a physical control machine and a control account.
Apple produces AI servers domestically at a factory in Houston, Texas, as part of a $600 billion U.S. investment commitment.
