The upcoming feature extends its transparency tags to mark slop songs.
Variety reports that Apple is working on a “Made With AI” tag for use in its Apple Music service. The publication states that this label will be required if “a significant portion of the content” involves the use of generative AI. There is no public timeline for when the tags will start appearing or if there is a more precise definition of which use cases will merit the label. We’ve reached out to Apple to confirm this upcoming feature and will update if we receive a response.
Earlier this year, Apple added support for transparency tags, which allowed AI-generated tracks to be marked accordingly so listeners knew what they were hearing. However, this move seems a bit timid since this designation is only applied at the discretion of labels and distributors. It appears that this new policy will create a more formal requirement for AI labeling.
Generative AI has caused many disruptions in creative fields, and music is no exception. Last month, several major labels called for slop to be banned from being included in global music charts. This year has also seen the emergence of interesting statistics and tools for identifying gen-AI music, notably from the niche streaming service Deezer. Other streaming platforms vary in their aggressiveness in trying to disinfluence or adopt AI.
