Modular phones make repairs easier by offering a removable battery that you can replace when reliability declines. This is something we’re starting to see more frequently with durable phones and tablets, but it remains rare with other consumer electronics. However, Sennheiser has launched new earbuds, the Momentum True Wireless 5, which actually have replaceable batteries. All you need is a screwdriver and you can swap them out, both the earbuds and the charging case, rather than throwing the whole thing away or buying a new pair.
User-replaceable batteries are something new for a brand as well-known as Sennheiser, a family-owned company based in Germany. Fairphone’s Fairbuds also offer user-replaceable batteries, but most other true wireless earbuds — even those with high repairability scores like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Live or Sony’s XM3 models — require specialized tools and special care to replace the batteries.
The battery life of the Momentum 5 earbuds is rated at around 12 hours, and when you factor in the charging case, you should be able to get a total of 40 hours. But battery life isn’t the headline here, longevity is. Average earphone batteries start to degrade noticeably after about 300 cycles, which usually happens in less than two years. Because earphone batteries are smaller, they complete these cycles much faster than phone batteries. Replacing headphones every two years due to unreliable batteries seems a bit unreasonable, doesn’t it? With the Momentum True Wireless 5 from Sennheiser, you can simply replace the batteries when the time is right. The headphones will be available in five colors starting in early September 2026 for around $300 USD.
What else do the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 headphones offer?
These are premium headphones we’re talking about – which is why a ton of gamers swear by Sennheiser headphones – so while the user-replaceable batteries are a major plus, the next important question is: do they sound good? With any pair of headphones or earphones, this is determined by the hardware and technology built into them. Sennheiser describes it all, starting with high-fidelity 7mm TrueResponse drivers, bass-friendly silicone eartips, and a host of additional features to enhance your listening.
These extras include immersive 3D audio, automatic wind noise cancellation, adaptive noise cancellation, and smart controls with app-based configurations. Besides Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity, they also include aptX Adaptive support for high-resolution audio up to 24-bit and 96 KHz, as well as aptX Lossless for impeccable playback. If you’re the type to take phone calls with your headphones, they even have AI-powered voice isolation support to keep everything clear and audible.
Without putting them on, there’s no way to know for sure how good it all sounds. But Sennheiser says the Momentum True Wireless 5 headphones deliver some of the most natural tones ever, and when you factor in Dolby Atmos and head tracking for spatial audio, it’s not hard to imagine an experience that’s incredibly immersive on some level. Best of all, most owners say that Sennheiser headphones last quite a long time because they are very well designed. Sennheiser also makes a variety of other products besides headphones, like soundbars, microphones, and hearing aids – all quality and all seem to hold up well.
