The adaptation of Sega’s classic games comes to Paramount+ on September 16.
Sega is reviving several of its old game franchises with new entries. It also brings back stagnant properties through adaptations, like an animated film Golden Ax series. The show – which was announced in 2024 – will debut on September 16 and a trailer has just been released.
The series focuses on a trio of heroes who set out to save the kingdom of Yuria from the evil Death Adder. Said villain wields the golden axe.
There are some fun nods to the games in the trailer, such as a reference to the character selection screen and Tyris saying that the crew will have to “defeat a series of increasingly tough enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder.” There’s a joking tone here, with meta-jokes about mini-bosses and Tyris shouting “Sega!” before launching into battle.
Ax Battler is voiced by Liam McIntyre (Marvel’s Wolverine) and Lisa Gilroy of Dropout celebrates the role of Tyris, while Widows Bay And The Americans star Matthew Rhys plays Gilius. The main trio is joined by future adventurer Hampton Squib, played by Danny Pudi.
THE Golden Ax the series was created by Mike McMahan (who created Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (writer for American Dad). It was originally supposed to air on Comedy Central, but will instead air on Paramount+.
The first season will last 10 episodes. It’s unclear how long each episode is, but it’s likely the length will be close to the roughly 32 minutes needed to beat the original game from 1989. I’ll never forget the sound of the game’s classic slash-slash-dunt-dunt-kick combo, which I hope will feature in the next Golden Ax game that’s apparently in the works.
