Threads users are upset they can’t block Meta’s new AI chatbot

Earlier today, Meta announced that it was testing a new Meta AI chatbot for Threads that would work much like Grok on

Although most people are not yet able to interact with the bot (initial testing is limited to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina and Singapore), the public account @meta.ai is visible to all users of the platform. The account’s initial posting sparked a flood of angry responses from users demanding to know why, unlike any other Threads account, there is no option to block it completely.

Some users have even reported reporting the account as spam, which usually ends with the option to “block”, only to find out that the block didn’t actually take effect. When I attempted this reporting flow, the block option never surfaced. “Users can’t block Meta AI” is currently the top trend on the platform, according to Threads, with over a million posts on the topic.

I contacted Meta to find out why it blocked the block button for Meta AI. The company previously told me that Threads users have the option to see “fewer” of the bot’s posts in their feeds by muting them or using the “not interested” button that informs the app’s recommendations. People can also hide replies to their own messages if someone loops in the AI.

A similar saga played out recently at Bluesky when former CEO turned chief innovation officer Jay Graber announced that the company was working on an AI assistant to help users create personalized feeds. The project, which has yet to launch publicly or post anything other than an introduction, has quickly become one of the most blocked accounts on the entire platform, second only to Vice President JD Vance’s account.

This is also not the first time that an unblockable Meta AI feature has been met with ridicule and outrage. The company has previously launched a number of AI-generated Instagram profiles with bizarre characters. Meta declared the blocking issue a “bug” and quickly killed the project.
