Anthropic Claude uses a few codes and symbols to represent specific functions in different applications. One of the most confusing is the different clock icons you can find in Claude browser extensions, developer agent workflows, or in the standard Claude app. Essentially, the clock symbol on Claude can mean any of the following: session history, scheduled tasks, or extended thinking. The first, session history, refers to the clock symbol used as a button in the Claude Code application, or extension for VS Code. The button is at the top of the panel and displays a clock with a counterclockwise arrow. Selecting it resumes previous conversations by opening a conversation history or searching for a specific conversation using the built-in tool.
The clock symbol may also refer to the scheduled tasks option in the Claude extension in Chrome; When you open the extension panel, you will see a clock icon in the upper right corner. This button allows you to define recurring browser tasks for Claude to manage at a selected interval.
Finally, the extended reflection is the clock icon with a plus symbol that you can find below the prompt window in a Claude chat. Selecting it causes the AI to take more time to consider your prompt before spitting out an answer; You typically use this feature for more complex issues that may require interim analysis to understand or resolve. Extended Thinking doesn’t switch to another model, but rather acts as a mode that you can turn on and off using the clock icon.

Since the clock symbol means different things depending on which Claude app you’re using, this can be confusing. You are also unlikely to see multiple clock symbols at the same time.
For example, many users may only see the clock icon for extended thinking or scheduled tasks. This is mainly because Claude Code targets tech-savvy users, since it is an agent coding tool – think of it as a utility-based resource intended to work alongside your coding projects. It’s not available to all users, as you need a Claude subscription or Anthropic Console API key to access it, even if you only want to use it for ambiance coding.
Extended reflection in Claude is also model-specific, which you can change in regular chat if you have a subscription. Claude for Chrome is for paid users only, which means you won’t see the scheduled tasks feature if you haven’t signed up for a plan or haven’t installed and enabled the extension on your browser. Essentially, unless you are both a paying and power user, you will not see the three clock symbols on the platform.
