Spotify confirms disco ball app icon is temporary and normal logo will return

Spotify recently changed its mobile app icon, and not everyone likes the festive disco ball logo.

The audio streaming service turned 20 and wanted to celebrate with a fun icon

The Spotify app’s flat green icon was recently replaced with a photorealistic disco ball.

The icon refresh was a fun change meant to be whimsical and celebratory for Spotify’s 20th anniversary as a company.

The problem is that not everyone knew that the icon change was supposed to be a temporary birthday celebration for Spotify.

For this reason, the company has gone out of its way to respond to social media posts, assuring everyone that the disco ball is not permanent.

Spotify is informing concerned internet users that the normal app icon will return this week.

Personally, I really liked the added twist as a temporary celebration. I guess a disco ball is just related enough to the music to make people think it was permanent.

People also take the aesthetic of the home screen very personally. Changing the design of a major Home screen icon in a way that doesn’t match other icon styles can be a problem.

Still, more apps should benefit from alternative app icon support on the iPhone. I’m sure some would appreciate having this icon as an option, but not the default one.

In 2020, Instagram ran a similar celebratory campaign and offered a variety of app icon options, but it was only temporary.

Even though Spotify’s disco ball icon has irked some users, I appreciate the energy put into doing something fun for the company’s 20th anniversary.

Anyway, the dancing ends this week because the disco ball should be interrupted.
