Here are some smart AI features we can expect from Siri powered by Gemini

Apple confirmed in January that Google’s Gemini AI model would power the new Siri features. This not only frees us from having to wait for Apple’s AI models to catch up, but also means we have a pretty good idea of what lies ahead.

Gemini Personal Intelligence provided our first look at what we can expect from the new Siri, and a Google event highlighted a number of additional features…

For a long time, it looked like Apple was planning to use its own AI models to power the new Siri. This raised doubts about its power and the date of its final launch.

Rumors have swirled that the iPhone maker was considering partnering with Google for access to its Gemini models, and the company confirmed this earlier this year.

“After careful evaluation, we have determined that Google’s technology provides the best-performing foundation for the Apple Foundation models and we are excited about the innovative new experiences it will deliver to our users.”

This seems to offer the best of both worlds: the best AI models coupled with Apple’s privacy protections.

A beta release of Gemini Personal Intelligence provided an exciting preview of what we can expect.

Personal Intelligence can retrieve specific details from text, photos or videos in your Google apps to personalize Gemini responses. This includes Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.), Google Photos, your YouTube watch history, and all the different Google search services you’ve used (Search, Shopping, News, Maps, Google Flights, and Hotels). The Apple version will of course pull information from Apple apps like Mail, Calendar, Photos and Notes.

The Android show revealed other upcoming Gemini features that should also come to the new Siri.

Task automation will work in more apps and support screen/image context. For example: “Imagine you have a long shopping list on your Notes app. Simply press and hold the power button on the list and ask Gemini to create a shopping cart with all the items due for delivery.”

Autofill with Google allows Gemini Personal Intelligence (opt-in) to support more form types.

Gboard Rambler upgrades voice typing with Gemini templates that get the gist of what you want to type and filter out filler words, pauses, repetitions, and autocorrections.

Android is getting a generative user interface, starting with the ability to create custom home screen widgets and Wear OS tiles filled with information from the web and your Google apps.

Whether an Apple version of this will come to iOS 27 remains to be seen, but it’s certainly something I’d like to see.
