New Apple CEO John Ternus has signed off on a major overhaul of Apple’s Vision Pro and smart glasses projects, solidifying Apple’s work in the category.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Ternus has canceled plans for a second Vision Pro and a lighter Vision Air. Kuo says there are only two smart glasses products in development, including the AI smart glasses that Apple is creating to rival the Meta Ray-Bans and a set of screen-equipped AR smart glasses.
“I think removing the Vision Pro line was the right decision, as Apple shifts its resources toward smart glasses with greater mass market potential,” Kuo writes. Kuo says the Vision product roadmap he shared in June 2025 is no longer a useful reference due to major changes Apple has made to its plans over the last year. Kuo’s Product Timeline originally featured seven products, but now only features two that are still relevant.
Kuo believes AI smart glasses will be released in 2027, while augmented reality glasses equipped with a screen and “optical waveguides” won’t be released until 2029 at the earliest. Optical waveguides combine a microdisplay with waveguides that guide the image to the user’s eyes. The lenses remain transparent, so that the virtual content appears to be superimposed on the real-world view.
BloombergMark Gurman of , commented on Kuo’s report and said that the Vision Air had been discontinued in October 2025, the display glasses intended to pair with a Mac had ended in January 2025, and the AI smart glasses would launch in late 2027.
While Kuo doesn’t think Apple is working on any version of a Vision Pro, Gurman says Apple has a Vision Pro 2 “in testing,” but that the category is “on ice.” Earlier this week, Gurman also said that Apple was working on a cheaper and lighter Vision Pro, but the device is unlikely to launch before late 2028 or 2029.
John Ternus is expected to take over as CEO of Apple on September 1, 2026. Current Apple CEO Tim Cook will remain executive chairman.
