Apple’s new iPhone lineup poses a new and difficult question for buyers: Is a foldable screen worth the feature compromises?
Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which start at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, there’s now the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which starts at $1,999. All three are new, all three feature the same A20 Pro chip, and all three are at the top of Apple’s lineup.
The Duo is not a Pro model, however, and Apple’s own terms make that clear. For example, its rear camera array is branded as the 48-megapixel Dual Fusion system rather than the Pro Fusion system, and the word Pro doesn’t appear anywhere in its name. The $700 premium over the iPhone 18 Pro Max buys a 7.6-inch foldable screen, not a better camera.
The three models still share a large amount of hardware. Shared features include:

For most buyers, the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max is the best choice. They offer the same A20 Pro chip as the Duo, a more versatile camera system, and a lower price. Choose the Pro if you prefer a smaller, lighter phone, or pay $100 more for the Pro Max if you want a larger screen and longer battery life.
The camera system is the clearest reason to choose an iPhone 18 Pro over the iPhone Duo. In addition to a more advanced main camera, the Pro models offer variable aperture for greater control over depth of field and a dedicated telephoto lens for subjects you can’t get close to. These benefits are important even if you never use professional capture formats: the Pro gives you more flexibility when framing a photo and controlling its appearance. If photography or videography is a priority, choose the iPhone 18 Pro. Buyers who also use ProRAW, ProRes, or manual controls have even more reason to do so.
The iPhone Duo is worth considering if you frequently want your phone to have a larger screen for reading, documenting, taking notes, or watching videos. Its foldable 7.6-inch screen and Apple Pencil support are unique in the iPhone lineup and could reduce the need to carry a separate tablet. If you unfold it several times a day for these kinds of tasks, the benefits might outweigh the camera compromises and higher price. If most of your usage is messaging, social media, and taking photos, there’s less reason to pay extra for the iPhone Duo.
The compromises also extend beyond the rear cameras. Its two front cameras are also inferior. The iPhone Duo also replaces Face ID with Touch ID and removes the action button, so buyers will have to adjust. Also missing is the Pro models’ LiDAR scanner, True Tone adaptive flash, four studio-quality microphones, and spatial photo and video recording.
You also need to be comfortable with the Duo when it is closed. Despite its smaller exterior screen, it’s wider and thicker than the two Pro models and slightly heavier than the Pro Max. Battery life is another reason to favor the Pro Max: the Duo matches the rated battery life of the smaller Pro, and using its internal display significantly reduces its video playback time.
The price gap remains significant at each storage level. A 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max is only $100 cheaper than the entry-level iPhone Duo, but that Duo only has 256GB of storage. For the same capacity, you pay $700 more than the Pro Max or $800 more than the Pro. This premium must be justified by the use you will make of the screen and by the importance you attach to certain compromises of the device.
Buy the Duo if you have a clear idea of what things you regularly unfold it for, or if the experience of Apple’s first foldable and radically new iPhone is in itself worth the premium to you. If you’re unsure how a larger screen would fit into your routine, the Pro models remain the stronger buy with their traditional “panel” form factor and host of superior specs.
