How to Save on Annual Apple App Store Subscriptions, With a Catch

Apple’s contract-style subscription payments for annual subscriptions have arrived in the App Store. Here are the details of how they work and what to look out for.

Apple lets developers offer a new subscription

Annual subscriptions are generally cheaper than monthly plans, but until recently they required an upfront payment before users know if an app is worth a long-term commitment. Apple now offers a contract-style subscription system for certain third-party apps in the App Store, allowing users to split annual prices over monthly payments.
The trade-off is that users still commit to making payments over a full year, even if they cancel early. Instead of paying an annual subscription all at once, users can spread the cost over several monthly payments while agreeing to commit to 12 months.
Developers benefit from a lower monthly price without giving up the predictability of an annual subscription. Monthly payment options are available for select third-party subscription services running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 or later.
