Before the foldable iPhone Duo launched, rumors suggested that Apple was focusing on eliminating the crease between the device’s two screens. All foldables have a visible crease, and it often becomes easier to see over time with constant folding and unfolding.
On the iPhone Duo product page, one of Apple’s FAQs is about the fold. “Does the iPhone Duo’s interior screen have a crease where it bends? reads the question.
Apple’s response says the screen is “wonderfully flat and smooth”, but it doesn’t say there are no creases and actually skirts the question it’s asking.
iPhone Duo features a wonderfully flat, smooth interior display with custom nano-textured finishing technology to reduce glare and reflections for an uninterrupted viewing experience. Optically clear adhesives allow display layers to slide when the screen bends, minimizing stress and wrinkling.
In the device’s press release, Apple says the Duo’s nano-texture display is intended to minimize crease visibility.
A premium nano-textured finish reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface that minimizes the visibility of creases and feels great to the touch.
Apple doesn’t list the number of folding cycles anywhere in its press release or on its website, but it does say that the hinge provides “smooth, balanced resistance for long-lasting reliability.” Apple also says the hinge has more than 100 components, while the iPhone Duo has support ribs and a titanium panel under the display.
Apple’s competitor Samsung lists folding cycles for its foldable devices. The new Galaxy Z Fold8, which has the same general shape as the iPhone Duo, is rated at 500,000 folds.
The iPhone Duo is expected to launch on October 23 and pre-orders will begin on October 16.
