The anxiety was understandable: what happens when that expensive battery starts to go bad? Actual data, however, shows that these concerns should not deter potential buyers. Modern electric vehicle batteries are not only holding up, they are outperforming almost every prediction made by the auto industry.
Now that electric vehicles have been around for years, it’s clear that previous estimates weren’t accurate, because after five years on the road, the average car retains up to 95% of its original range.
What were the initial predictions for electric vehicle battery life?
Early skeptics of electric vehicles believed that the batteries would degrade quickly. In 2010, when the original Nissan Leaf launched, the car lacked battery cooling technology and was known to lose range at an alarming rate. Between 2011 and 2016, about 8.5% of electric vehicles ultimately required a complete battery replacement, according to a 2025 study by Recurrent, a data science company that provides battery monitoring tools.
This has only fueled anxiety about electric vehicles and their reliability. A 2025 survey by research firm AutoPacific indicates that fear of battery replacement costs remains the top reason consumers avoid electric vehicles. However, modern data no longer confirms this fear.

Among modern electric vehicles built from 2022 onwards, only 0.3% have needed a battery replacement, according to the same recurring study. After five years on the road, the average electric vehicle still offers up to 95% of its original range, which is much better than initially expected.
According to Geotab, a connected car data company that has analyzed more than 22,700 electric vehicles, modern batteries degrade at an average rate of 2.3% per year. At this rate, electric vehicle batteries could reasonably last 20 years or more.

However, real-world driving is very dynamic.
The SLAC-Stanford Battery Center at Stanford University tested 92 commercial lithium-ion EV batteries under different discharge profiles over two years. The tests aimed to mimic real-world driving, including stop-and-go traffic, short accelerations, regenerative braking and long rest periods. Under these circumstances, battery life is extended by up to 38% compared to constant current discharge used in standard laboratory tests.
How can electric vehicle owners maximize their battery life?

Geotab’s analysis identified charging behavior as the largest controllable factor in battery health. Cars using high-power DV fast charging above 100 kW degrade at up to 3% per year, double the rate of those relying on low-power charging. Additionally, keeping your battery between 20 and 80 percent charge during regular use significantly reduces long-term wear and tear.
The gap between early fears about electric vehicle batteries and today’s reality is huge – and it’s only getting wider. Degradation rates and replacement costs are decreasing, so the case for electric vehicle ownership gets stronger every year.
