This week marked the release of “Steve Jobs in Exile: The Untold Story of NeXT and the Remaking of an American Visionary” by Geoffrey Cain, a delightfully comprehensive book that delves deeply into the years most people overlook when recounting the Apple co-founder’s famous redemption story. “Steve Jobs in Exile” adds interesting tidbits to what you think you know about Steve Jobs. There is a scene in Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” where Rufus, the forgotten 13th apostle played by Chris Rock, notes: In the Bible, Jesus goes from twelve to thirty. This is pretty bad storytelling. And while Steve…

Unfortunately, starting at $1,095, it’s also rather expensive. Herman Miller Legendary furniture maker Herman Miller has dabbled in gaming desks before. However, its latest effort appears to be a big step forward, as the Coyl features an even more sophisticated modular design along with great details, including a wider variety of finishes and better cable management. While this probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has seen the price of an authentic Eames chair, the Coyl certainly isn’t cheap. It starts at $1,095, but costs $1,635 in its “primary configuration,” which includes an upgraded…

Discord says it has enabled end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for every voice and video call by default across its platforms, including desktop, mobile, web, and consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. The rollout covers DMs, Group DMs, Voice Channels and Go Live streams. No opt-in is required and no settings to change. Stage channels are the only exception, as they are designed to broadcast to a wider audience rather than for personal discussions. The protection runs on DAVE, an open-source Discord protocol first introduced in September 2024. In a blog post, Discord’s Mark Smith said building it was slow and complicated, in…

Flash Film/Getty Images Internet cables become seismic sensors on land, under the sea and eventually on the Moon. Millions of miles of fiber optic cables already cover the Earth, including approximately 920,000 miles of undersea cables on the ocean floor. As some of the oldest cables are removed from the ocean and new cables are laid, scientists are increasingly tracking natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes and floods along this global network. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) uses laser pulses to read minute changes in vibration, stress, ground motion, and water…
Searagen/Getty Images Submarines are fascinating pieces of military technology that play a major role in national defense, with nuclear submarines capable of staying underwater for months and navigating without GPS while they carry out stealth missions. If you’ve watched TV shows or movies featuring submarines, you’ve probably noticed that intense scenes are often bathed in red light. This isn’t just for dramatic effect; Submarines actually use red light because it’s easier on the eyes. To understand why submarines use red lights at night, it is important to know how the…
