Since 2025, all new Apple products use USB-C instead of Lightning connection cables, thus standardizing chargers for smartphone and tablet brands. However, many iPhone and AirPod users still have older ports, which means there are plenty of Lightning cables available for purchase, although fewer than USB-C. In terms of charging speed, data transfer speed and versatility, USB-C cables are clearly superior to Lightning. There is, however, still some debate over whether one type of connector makes for a more durable cable than the other.
Some say Lightning cables are more fragile, while others say they offer a tighter, more secure fit than USB-C, but there’s no conclusive evidence one way or the other. What matters much more than the connector type is the quality of the cable. Because USB-C cables are so common, it’s easy to buy a cheap one that works in a pinch but doesn’t last, especially if you use it with many different devices. This may make USB-C seem more fragile, but there are also plenty of inexpensive Lightning cables available, as well as high-quality options for both connector types.
Why it’s worth spending more on a USB-C or Lightning cable

Although it may seem like the only difference between cables is their connector types, the quality of similar cables can vary greatly. Not all Lightning or USB-C cables charge at the same speed, as the thickness and length of the cable impacts the amount of power that can be delivered. The USB-C ports themselves aren’t all the same either, which is a common USB-C myth that has been debunked. As important as a fast, durable cable is, your charging brick and the device itself also matter, because the weakest link will determine the maximum speed. If durability matters more to you than charging speed, the Amazon Basics USB-C cable is a solid, inexpensive option that survived a Consumer Reports stress test.
The $4.50 cord lasted more than 11,500 bends, an estimated usage of about six years, although it’s worth mentioning that as a USB-A to USB-C cable, it’s limited to 15W and doesn’t meet fast-charging standards. When it comes to Lightning ports, the same test determined Apple’s USB-C to Lightning cable to be the most durable, yielding similar results to Amazon Basic, albeit at Apple’s premium price. Whether your device uses USB-C or Lightning cables, their durability has little to do with the connector itself and more to do with the overall quality of the cable.
