Apple’s first trailer for “Cape Fear” transforms the classic thriller into a darker psychological horror series led by Amy Adams, Javier Bardem and Patrick Wilson for Apple TV.
Apple has revealed a darker TV adaptation of “Cape Fear,” set to premiere June 5, 2026 on Apple TV. The 10-episode series stars Amy Adams, Javier Bardem and Patrick Wilson, with Nick Antosca as creator and showrunner.
With Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as executive producers, this adaptation promises a captivating experience for viewers.
The series will premiere globally on Friday, June 5 with its first two episodes, followed by weekly releases through July 31. Bardem plays Max Cady, the convicted killer originally played by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and Robert De Niro in Scorsese’s 1991 remake.
Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Adams and Wilson, find their lives falling apart after Max Cady is released from prison and targets the couple who helped get him there. Apple’s first trailer leans heavily on psychological horror with tense family scenes, escalating threats inside the Bowden home, and Bardem’s physically intimidating portrayal of Cady.
Nick Antosca created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. The project also reunites Scorsese and Spielberg with the franchise after the two men worked together on the 1991 film, which was directed by Scorsese and produced by Spielberg.
“Cape Fear” gives Apple another drama tied to major Hollywood filmmakers and recognizable sources. The company’s streaming strategy prioritizes high-profile productions with established creators, recognized franchises and award-winning actors.
Adams and Bardem also serve as executive producers on the series. Their involvement continues Apple’s trend of structuring major productions around high-profile creative partnerships with established actors and filmmakers.
Antosca’s experience suggests the series will lean more toward psychological horror than previous versions of “Cape Fear.” He previously created and executive produced genre projects including “Channel Zero,” “A Friend of the Family,” and “The Act.”
The expansion of “Cape Fear” into series changes the structure of the story.
Apple’s 10-episode adaptation expands the story into a longer psychological thriller built around sustained tension and increasing paranoia. The format gives the series more space to explore the unraveling of the Bowden family and the manipulation tactics of Max Cady over multiple episodes.
The weekly releases also turn “Cape Fear” into another long-running Apple TV rollout instead of a single binge-streaming event. This structure has become increasingly common for prestige streaming drama series that rely on continued tension and discussion with audiences over several weeks.
Supporting cast includes Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Malia Pyles, CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector and Anna Baryshnikov. Oscar nominee Morten Tyldum directs the pilot episode and also serves as executive producer.
The series is produced by UCP and Amblin Television and is based on both John D. MacDonald’s novel “The Executioners” and previous film adaptations.
