In his new role as chief hardware officer, Johny Srouji, Apple’s longtime head of chip manufacturing, has reorganized the company’s hardware development leadership “to accelerate work on future devices,” according to BloombergIt’s Mark Gurman. The shakeup aims to bring chip and product development closer together. “The hardware redesign also aims to better integrate teams working on silicon internally with those creating products,” Gurman explained. The report says that oversight of Apple product design is moving from Kate Bergeron to two of her longtime deputies: Shelly Goldberg and Dave Pakula. Goldberg was already in charge of Mac product design, while Pakula led the design of Apple Watch, iPad and AirPods products, but they will now oversee all Apple products. Apple’s product design group is separate from the industrial design group, the report explains. “Industrial design determines the overall vision and appearance of new devices, while product design focuses on translating those concepts into actual products that can be shipped to consumers,” Gurman said. Bergeron now oversees product reliability across all Apple devices, and she will continue to lead the team overseeing product materials. With John Ternus set to become Apple CEO on September 1, the report states that two of Ternus’ former deputies will now report directly to Srouji: Matt Costello, who led development of Apple’s home and audio products, and Kevin Lynch, who leads a special projects group focused on developing robotic devices. The report outlines many other role changes, with the reorganization overall appearing quite significant as Apple’s Ternus era approaches.
