TV panels have changed significantly over the past few years. With more complex technology built into our displays, it’s no wonder we wonder what type of panel will last longer. For now, it’s hard to say with certainty that mini LED displays last longer than OLED panels. The average lifespan of an OLED TV is around 50,000 to 100,000 hours, and that depends entirely on what type of media you consume, how much, and exactly how you do it. Meanwhile, mini LED TVs are expected to last around 100,000 hours.
That said, any difference is not because one is worse than the other. In fact, it is always recommended to get an OLED TV if you want to enjoy media at its best. This is due to how the OLED works. Rather than having LEDs lighting up areas or the entire back of the screen, each diode or pixel is powered individually. OLED can produce “true” blacks and whites and is often much more color accurate than other panels. However, over time, these diodes weaken or begin to “burn out”, leaving the ghosts of old images on the screen.
Where the mini LED has the advantage over the OLED is that it is almost impossible to burn an entire image into it. Some degradation is expected, such as color drift, but a static image cannot be burned onto a mini LED display like it can on OLED. Mini LED still uses the backlighting solution typical of non-OLED displays, but illuminates areas rather than the entire image at once.
OLED or mini LED, you can’t prepare everything
It has already been observed that newer versions of mini LEDs, such as mini RGB LEDs, have color accuracy issues. That said, unless, like HDTVTest on YouTube, you go up and compare everything on a granular level, you won’t find this to have an impact on screen life.
Much information about the lifespan of OLED and mini LED camp TVs comes from extensive experiments carried out by Rtings. The team spent more than two years testing hundreds of TVs to see how long each brand and panel could last. In it, many OLED displays exhibited some form of burnt-in image after being driven to maximum for so long.
Of course, very few will have the screen at full speed all the time, and even if you watched a movie every night in the best conditions, the OLED TV will still last a good while. Surprisingly, very few TVs died during these tests.
One thing that will kill the fun of both types of TVs is dead pixels. Burn-in will inevitably come on an OLED, but we cannot predict a dead pixel. These are LEDs or diodes that do not receive any light, resulting in a black or colored pixel on the screen. On some screens, these can sometimes be “stuck” pixels, which you will need to use software and a prayer to “unstick” them by making them explode with different colors.
