The good news is that many of these complaints can be resolved and many of them are not Netgear’s fault at all. These are just router issues that appear across all brands, from the cheapest budget boxes to the most expensive flagships. A weak or dropping Wi-Fi signal is usually caused by the location of the router

Netgear’s own troubleshooting guide suggests first ruling out broader issues by connecting a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. If the wired connection works but the Wi-Fi doesn’t, the problem is almost certainly on the wireless side of the network rather than the connection itself.
Netgear recommends verifying that the router’s wireless radios are enabled via the web interface before blaming the hardware, as a spurious setting or pressed button can silently turn off the radios. This is directly related to how often a Netgear router needs to be replaced. There’s no one answer that fits every household, but once a router model no longer receives security updates, that’s the time homeowners should upgrade.
But rather than waste a router that still works well, homeowners comfortable with a little DIY could turn to OpenWrt. This is an open source firmware move for existing router models like the Nighthawk RAX120, which can keep an aging device patched and usable after official support ends. High-end routers tend to be built with long-term firmware support, which is part of what makes Netgear Nighthawk routers so expensive, for example. Still, with an older unit, the safest approach is to treat the end of support email as a deadline and schedule a replacement or open source firmware option if available.
Overheating and hardware failures
Routers are practically small computers, and like any computer, they can overheat and fail over time.
