A sequel to Until dawn is in development at Firesprite studio in Liverpool and will arrive on PlayStation 5 in 2027. Until dawn 2 seems to have all the trappings of the original choose-your-own-adventure serial killer survival sim, but this time, instead of being set on a snowy mountain, it all takes place on a tropical island.
Until dawn 2 stars a group of young adult ghost hunters, all friends except for the random passionate guy who no one seems to know. They operate a brand new paranormal investigation channel and have just signed a deal with a TV network. So they are sent to an isolated island to collect (or create) images. There’s your general walking and frolicking among waterfalls and greenery, and then suddenly a masked murderer with a machete cuts someone’s chest open. The sequel features the series’ signature fast-paced events, with deadly consequences and lots of blood, if you make a bad choice.
Here’s how Firesprite describes his approach to the sequel’s mechanics:
“Will you risk injury to save an adorable baby boar from a gnarly bear trap? Maintaining a scandalous affair, even if it could blow up the group? Pushing someone to their breaking point, all for the sake of the content your intimidating boss says you need to get? unintended consequences. »
Until dawn 2 is a standalone story and it seems to be laser-focused on the teen slasher aesthetic, which is certainly a welcome angle of attack. In the trailer, the scene where the couple is interrupted mid-kiss in the forest could have been taken directly from Cabin in the woodsa classic of the genre. Until dawn came out in 2015 with a similar B-horror vibe, so those are all good signs.
Until dawn was a product of Supermassive Games and published by Sony, and it was a cult hit that spawned a few spinoffs, including VR games Rush of blood And The hospitalized patient. The spiritual successor to Supermassive Until dawn, The careerwas released by 2K in 2022, and while it had some fun moments, it lagged behind its forebear in terms of overall flow and tension. The studio also released The anthology of dark images between 2019 and 2022. At the beginning of 2024, the co-founders of Supermassive leave the studio and a majority of its employees are laid off.
Firesprite, the team in charge of Until dawn 2was built by former members of Wipeout House Studio Liverpool and purchased entirely by Sony in 2021. Sony has owned the Until Dawn license since the beginning, hence the title “spiritual successor” to the Supermassive sequels, and produced a 2025 film and remake based on the original game.
