The iPhone 18 Pro will arrive this fall, and rumors suggest it will continue a design trend that began last year with the iPhone 17 Pro: making the iPhone even thicker. Here’s why I’m actually behind this decision, even though I previously opposed it.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to get thicker and heavier, and I’m all for the change for two reasons.

Last year, when the first rumors came in that the iPhone 17 Pro would be thicker than its predecessor, I wasn’t sold on the idea.
I was using an iPhone 16 Pro at the time and felt it was already quite thick and heavy. Hence, my great interest in the ultra-thin iPhone Air.
But I admit that my skepticism was undeserved. Apple knew what it was doing.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to be even thicker than its predecessor, but probably not by much.
And this year, my reaction is very different: I am fully involved.
This is mainly due to two reasons:
- The existence of the iPhone Air
- The impact of AI
This time last year, we’d been stuck with the same basic iPhone Pro design for years. And the device seemed thicker and heavier than seemed necessary, at least for my purposes.
But now the iPhone Air is here, and I love it. Apple has proven it can create an ultra-thin, futuristic model. And it is now available worldwide and accessible to everyone.
Given that the iPhone Air exists, it makes perfect sense for Apple to push its Pro models further into “pro” territory. If that means being thicker and heavier to provide better battery life and higher performance, I’m all for it.

Anyone who wants something different can choose the iPhone Air. But the growing impact of AI also makes a more robust iPhone a logical move.
Although Apple has always pushed the boundaries of what’s possible for a handheld, AI has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. As such, if the iPhone 18 Pro needs to get thicker and heavier to better serve as an AI powerhouse, I’m fine with that.
Before, I was all for a thinner and lighter iPhone. Now that we have one and the world’s computing needs are refocusing around AI, the idea of a thicker iPhone 18 Pro is one I can easily support.
What do you think about the iPhone 18 Pro becoming thicker and heavier this year? Let us know in the comments.
