5 reasons to buy the iPhone 18 Pro instead of an iPhone Duo

At Apple’s “Surprise & Shine” event, the company introduced its new generation of iPhone 18 Pro models and an all-new iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable device. While the hype is real for the company’s new iPhone iteration in a never-before-seen form factor, some customers are concerned because the iPhone Duo doesn’t offer the best specs available on the Pro models. For example, while the company spent a lot of time in the keynote talking about the new Pro cameras, the iPhone Duo segment focused on the innovative design and new ways to interact with it. Still, if you’re considering upgrading from your current phone to one of these two devices, some reasons to choose the iPhone 18 Pro over the Duo include longer battery life, better camera features, and a more affordable price.

Even though the iPhone 18 Pro looks a lot like the iPhone 17 Pro, several tweaks could make the update interesting not only for those who upgraded their phone last year, but also for someone coming from an older model, adding features like the second generation of photographic styles, the thermal vapor chamber system and other functions. Although the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo take different approaches, both target Apple’s high-end market, so choosing the right one could save you a few hundred dollars while still giving you the best specs on the market.

If you decide to buy the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo, start with the price. The iPhone 18 Pro model starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, both with 256GB of storage. The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, starts at $1,999 – with the same storage. For that price, customers could get the 1TB version of the smaller Pro for $1,799 or the 1TB version of the larger Pro for $1,899 and still save money.

Although leasing the phone through Apple’s new Upgrade Program could make it much more affordable, customers still have to pay at least $57.99/month for this new iPhone, even though the standard Pro starts at $34.99. Additionally, if you’re a content creator, record a lot of videos, or have a huge library of downloaded content, 256GB might not be enough and the total price of the iPhone Duo could exceed $3,000.

That said, even though iPhones are the primary devices used for streaming video, browsing social media, working, etc., Apple is now entering a very expensive market, making the company’s latest products much more difficult for users to purchase. On top of that, repairs for this phone could likely get very expensive, since an iPhone 17 Pro Max repair can cost up to $899, almost three-quarters of the product’s price.

If having the best camera setup is most important when buying a new iPhone, the iPhone Duo may not be for you. Woozad recently discovered that the foldable phone’s goals are similar to those of the iPhone 17e. Additionally, several visible and under-the-hood differences show how much better the iPhone 18 Pro’s lenses are than those on Apple’s most expensive phone.

For example, the iPhone Duo has a 12 MP Center Stage front camera, while the iPhone 18 Pro has an 18 MP sensor. As a result, the Pro phone can capture more data than the foldable. Comparing the main sensors, the iPhone 18 Pro not only has larger sensors, but its main camera also has a variable aperture and a 48 MP telephoto lens, offering 8x optical zoom and up to 40x digital zoom. In addition to the new variable aperture camera, Apple has also added Pro controls, giving customers much more freedom when shooting with their iPhone.

Another key feature is the Apple Reference Image protocol, exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro models, which guarantees image authenticity, meaning people can check whether an image is real or has been altered with AI, and to what extent. The company claims that this protocol is like a digital negative and that starting with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, third-party applications will be able to view these reference images.

While we have to wait for the actual battery tests, Apple claims that the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the longest battery life of any iPhone, with up to 45 hours of video playback. The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, offers up to 44 hours with the outer display (the smaller one), with battery life dropping to 31 hours when customers use the larger one. For streaming video playback, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasts up to 40 hours, while the Duo lasts up to 37 hours.

In other words, if you still need your phone to have enough charge to get you through the day, then the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains king. Apple has also improved the fast charging capabilities of the Pro Phones, as they can charge up to 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W compatible adapter and USB-C charging cable. For the iPhone Duo, under the same conditions, it can reach up to 50% in around 20 minutes.

If you forgot to charge your phone or it didn’t charge properly overnight with MagSafe, you can get half the battery back in just 15 minutes, making this feature ideal for emergencies. Even though Apple no longer offers a power brick with the iPhone, several GaN chargers can do the trick, or, if you prefer, Satechi recently released a charger hub that can deliver these charging speeds while still allowing your MacBook and iPad to reach full capacity in no time.

Almost a decade ago, Apple introduced the iPhone X with Face ID support. At the time, the company said that it was the most reliable and secure way to easily unlock the iPhone. Featuring a “state-of-the-art” TrueDepth camera system, this biometric authentication used a dot projector, infrared camera and spotlight to scan your face in a fraction of a second and unlock the phone. As Apple continued to improve and expand this technology across the iPhone lineup, the company took a step backwards (or sideways) with the iPhone Duo, which features Touch ID.

While Touch ID remains a convenient and common feature in several Apple products, it’s odd that Apple’s most expensive and innovative phone uses technology that it recently removed from the iPhone lineup when it discontinued the iPhone SE 3 in favor of the iPhone 16e.

It’s possible that a future iteration of the iPhone Duo could feature Face ID, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman even suggested that a future model could have a telephoto lens, but so far, if you want the most convenient and secure way to unlock your phone, then the iPhone 18 Pro is still a better option — and if you choose the iPhone Duo, Apple lets Apple Watch users unlock the phone if the watch is near their wrists. It’s a good workaround, but still not as effective as Face ID.

iPhone Duo offers a whole new way to interact with iPhone. It supports Apple Pencil, multitasking and rotation, allowing you to use iPhone in any direction. The phone is covered in cameras and you can choose different angles to create unique experiences. While many customers see this as a benefit, others see it as an obstacle they don’t want to overcome. If you want the best and most reliable phone available, the iPhone 18 Pro models are the ideal choice. After all, they’ve been delivering the same experience to iPhone users for nearly a decade, and even with the changes in iOS 26 with Liquid Glass, everything still feels simple. With the iPhone Duo, there’s a new learning curve for understanding how apps will behave side by side. A few experiences aren’t available, like the aforementioned Face ID or the action button. Others have been added, like Smart Capture for photos and different positions to use the phone.

Even though there’s no right or wrong choice of a new gadget, the iPhone 18 Pro still seems like a safer bet because customers know exactly what they’re getting: how they interact with the phone, how the cameras work, and even what to expect from this device’s durability in the years to come. For the iPhone Duo, on the other hand, we will still have to discover all this.
