You can personalize your Samsung Galaxy Watch with this free design tool

There is a trade-off built into almost every technology product by default – one that shapes opinions about the product and either increases or prohibits its market share: functionality versus usability. There were, for example, many digital music players before the iPod, but only Apple’s device managed to simplify the experience into a single control wheel. Combined with iTunes, which allowed users to simply connect and sync rather than mess with folder hierarchies. The iPod was destined to become a household name, thanks to its basic features but great usability.

Samsung is an exception to this universal principle. Despite being the second largest smartphone vendor on the planet, the company manages to pack more enthusiast features into its products than any other brand. How can we achieve this without putting off casual users? By intelligently separating these more specialized features from the rest of the product. If you want to delve into customizing your Samsung Galaxy phone, you’ll need to download the Good Lock and Good Guardians suites from the Galaxy Store as separate apps. Casual users never need to leave the soothing embrace of the default settings, but adventurous users may find themselves in a mess.

Samsung has increasingly taken the same approach with the Galaxy Watch line. This recently culminated in the Galaxy Watch8, which made an honorable mention on our list of the best smartwatches for 2026. Users looking to personalize their watch have plenty of options right out of the box with pre-made watch faces from the Play Store or the Galaxy Wearable app. But for those who want as personal an experience as possible, there’s an app for that. Samsung Developer offers a tool called Watch Face Studio. Available for Windows and macOS, it gives you the resources to create any face you can imagine for Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watches.

After downloading the Samsung Watch Face Studio installer from the Samsung Developer website, you will install it like any other computer program. Click through the prompts until the installation is complete and you can get started right away. The app will ask you a few setup questions when you first launch it, but the default options are fine.

Once inside, you’ll find that the app is much more feature-rich than you would have imagined. This is a comprehensive graphics creation tool that just happens to be focused on creating smart watch faces. You can add clocks, graphs, progress bars, and more, configuring them for different system or app functions, such as displaying step counts, battery life, countdowns, and more. Change the background or replace it with a photo, insert an animation or GIF, or just sprinkle in a few line icons for added style. You can make the watch face as complex or minimal as you want, and you can adjust both its normal appearance and its always-on display (AOD).

Samsung might make Watch Face Studio available to consumers, but the website copy suggests that Samsung hopes it will be used by companies to design branded watch faces for customers, or by designers who want to put their watch faces up for sale. But for the dedicated consumer who has a particular vision in mind for their watch and enjoys tinkering with technology, it’s a joy to play with.

One thing to keep in mind when designing your watch face is how resource-intensive it will be. A minimal setup with just a clock is likely to extend the life of your watch’s battery, while a highly animated watch face filled with real-time information will drain it more quickly.

Once you’ve created your dream watch face in Samsung Watch Face Studio, you can publish it to the store or send it directly to your own watch. If you are trying to publish your watch faces, refer to Samsung’s documentation. As for transferring it to your own watch, you’ll need to set up wireless debugging first. This will allow remote control of your Galaxy Watch, so make sure the watch and the computer you’re running Watch Face Studio on are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and only use a trusted network. Disable debugging when you’re done.

To enable wireless debugging, slide down at the top of your watch and press the button gear icon to enter settings. Scroll down and select About the watchthen touch Software information. Find the box titled Software version and press it repeatedly until you are prompted to enter your watch’s PIN. Enter PINand developer options will be enabled. Return to the main Settings menu and scroll down to find Developer options. Tap it, then tap Wireless debugging. Activate it, then return to Watch Face Studio and click Run on device top right. Click on the plus symbol in the resulting Connected Devices pop-up window, then enter the IP address indicated on the watch, with the port number (the five digits after the colon in the IP). On the watch, tap Pair a new devicethen enter the pairing code and the port number displayed on the screen in the remaining fields on your computer. Press ALL RIGHTthen click on the watch name in the List of connected devices. After a few seconds, your Galaxy Watch will now display your personalized face.
