They signal to the world that someone has completed a game.
Xbox just announced something called Mythic Achievements, which is its answer to Sony’s long-running platinum trophy program for PlayStation. These are earned when people “complete all of a game’s original achievements”. Basically, it’s a badge of honor proving that you put in 100% time to earn a title.
Achievements added later via DLC or updates do not impact Mythic status, with the company saying “it’s up to you to keep it.” They’re also retroactive, meaning you’ll get a Mythic Achievement for games fully completed in the past. “The next time you visit your profile, you may discover that some of your favorite games have already reached Mythic status,” Alex Charters, senior product manager, wrote in a blog post. Support extends to Xbox 360 titles.

This data can be viewed via the new Gaming tab in profiles. The page offers different milestones and each mythical achievement presents a “heroic framework”. There’s a social component here, as you can easily check a friend’s Games tab to see if they’re done. Gears of War 2, For example. There’s also a progress bar above each game’s achievement list that indicates how close you are to the vaunted Mythic status.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased this program earlier this year and it’s available now. Microsoft game consoles have had an achievement system for a long time, but there hasn’t been a multi-tiered component like this until now.
The only caveat here is that this program is currently only available to Xbox Insiders. This platform allows users to test new system updates, applications, features and games before rolling them out to the general public. On the plus side, registration is free.
This is just the latest fun little tool to arrive for those in the know. The company is currently testing a service to create digital versions of physical games, which is quite convenient. It is also experimenting with a free, ad-supported cloud gaming platform.
