Anker Innovations is the parent company of several brands, including Eufy, AnkerWork for 4K webcams and work equipment, power plant subsidiary Anker Solix, eufyMake for 3D printers, and Soundcore. It could actually get a little confusing if you were browsing the different brands and didn’t know that they all belong under one umbrella – Anker Innovations also owns Anker, the mobile accessories brand. This is one of the main reasons why Anker Innovations recently announced a name change for its Soundcore brand. Originally announced in its Chinese market, Soundcore disappears immediately, and instead all products under the potential moniker are now Anker Sound & Video.
Although Soundcore is widely known for its audio products such as Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and headphones, there are also a few other products under this name, such as Anker’s Nebula projectors. It could be argued that this is even more confusing, because projectors are a video-based product and “Soundcore” looks more like audio hardware, which it primarily was.
Anker Innovations did not give a direct reason for the change in its announcement via ITHome, although it may be implied. The new Anker Sound & Video adequately covers the company’s audio and video products while moving away a little more easily. No official announcement has yet been made outside of China. Technically, Anker isn’t completely abandoning Soundcore. The products will still be there and new ones will likely be released, although everything will fall under the new title. This is good news because according to users, some of the best Bluetooth speakers you can buy are available under the Anker Soundcore name.
Why is Anker changing the Soundcore name?
To recap, Anker and Soundcore were actually the same company, under the same parent company, Anker Innovations, but the name will now be combined under Anker Sound & Video, covering a multitude of audio and video equipment. This overall simplifies things, unifies the brand and makes it easier for customers to refer to and recognize the name, as Anker Sound & Video also connects more directly to Anker Innovations. The quality shouldn’t really change because of this. Anker already makes great products, scoring top marks with some of the highest-rated headphones on Amazon, the best budget and expensive noise-canceling headphones, as well as inexpensive but high-quality wireless speakers. Functionally, nothing changes, just the name and its social media channels, account services and content updates.
Anker is not the first company in history to change its name in an effort to consolidate and improve brand direction, and it will not be the last. HBO Max became simply Max, and PepsiCo consolidated the Pepsi and beverage brands with its snack brands, to name a few examples. Elsewhere in the tech world, Apple ignored iOS 19 to keep its products labeled the same with a unified year-based naming system.
Sometimes consolidation also happens after one major brand acquires another, such as Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods or Paramount’s pending acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery, which is currently on hold. The latter will likely see a name change occur if and when the brands consolidate. This is also a great example of improving brand recognition; imagine having to refer to several major streaming giants to talk about a single service.
