With only two amplifier manufacturing sites, Marshall’s ownership became a bit complicated. From its inception in 1962 until 2023, it was owned by the Marshall family, founded by Jim Marshall. Jim, also known as “The Father of Loud” and “The Lord of Loud,” died in 2012 at age 88. In 2023, the company was sold to the Swedish company Zound, which had been manufacturing licensed speakers and headphones, such as the Major V, under the Marshall name since 2010. Details were not disclosed on how much Zound paid for the Marshall brands, but the deal included Natal Drums, which Marshall took over in 2010.
This combined effort became the Marshall Group. Marshall Group comprises Marshall-brand amplifiers, headphones, and Bluetooth speakers. One of the major changes was its shift from a UK-centric entity to a Stockholm-based group company. However, this arrangement did not last long, as several investment groups sold their stakes in Marshall Group to the Chinese company HongShan Capital in 2025. After regulatory approval, still pending, HongShan will become the majority shareholder of Marshall Group, investing $1.15 billion.
HongShan buys Marshall
Marshall Group shareholders who sold their stakes included Altor, Telia Company, Time For Growth, and Zenith VC. This transaction represented HongShan’s largest European investment. International law firm Taylor Wessing, which advised Marshall Group on the transaction, reports that HongShan manages more than $55 billion in assets across various funds on behalf of large institutions.
However, despite having a clear majority shareholder, the Marshall family retained over 20% of the company. Company details for Marshall can be found on the UK government’s Companies House database. The company’s board now includes directors linked to the Marshall family and executives affiliated with HongShan, the legal name being Marshall HoldCo (UK) Limited.
Since the 2025 transaction, no manufacturing changes have been publicly announced for Marshall amps, speakers, or headphones. Two products launched after the deal, the Middleton 2 loudspeaker and the Kilburn III loudspeaker, were well received. However, HongShan intends to expand Marshall overseas, particularly in China, as several vacancies are open, including PR manager, brand protection specialist, and account manager.
