You may subscribe to Straight Talk or Total Wireless, but that carrier’s name doesn’t appear in your iPhone’s status bar. Instead, you may see “TFW” at the top of your iPhone or in Control Center, a label you may not recognize. But there’s no need to worry. This is not an error or a bug, and it is not a misspelling of the acronym “FTW,” short for “for victory,” that you may see on social media. TFW stands for TracFone, and it’s the name that’s supposed to appear on the iPhone for users subscribed to one of TracFone’s various cell phone brands, including Straight Talk and Total Wireless.
The TFW carrier name comes from the Carrier Bundle for TracFone that iPhone can install when you get service from one of TracFone’s brands. This Carrier Bundle (or carrier settings) also ensures that the iPhone has the necessary carrier information that allows it to connect to the carrier’s network for specific services, including Internet and messaging. The TFW label is a TracFone choice that ensures the carrier’s identity is always visible. An iPhone connected to a cellular network will always display the name of that network, a feature that can come in handy in scenarios where cellular coverage is spotty. The iPhone’s status bar will indicate when no coverage is available, and some models may suggest satellite connectivity for emergency services (SOS).
Which carriers obtain the TFW label?
TracFone Wireless is an MVNO operator, short for mobile virtual network operator. This means that TracFone does not have its own cell tower network. Instead, TracFone uses the infrastructure of a larger mobile carrier to offer wireless service to consumers. Verizon is the leading network provider. The company purchased TracFone in late 2021, although TracFone has also used AT&T and T-Mobile networks in the past. Regardless of who provides network access to TracFone, iPhone users will always see the TFW symbol at the top of the handset, depending on the TracFone brand through which they can avail the service.
TracFone operates several different brands, including Straight Talk, TracFone Wireless, Simple Mobile, Total Wireless, SafeLink Wireless, Walmart Family Mobile, Net10 Wireless, Page Plus, GoSmart Mobile and Clearway. Some of them may display TFW carrier branding in the iPhone status bar, according to TracFone brands support documents. The same TFW label may appear on Android phones, which also display the carrier name in the status bar.
Can you remove the TFW label?
If you don’t like the TFW label appearing in the iPhone status bar and want to remove or replace it, there’s bad news for you: that’s not possible. All iPhones will show the network (carrier name) they are connected to unless there is no coverage or Airplane mode is enabled. This feature is not user customizable because the carrier name is part of the carrier identity data that iPhone downloads when activated on a network. The only way to remove TFW is to replace it with another cellular service provider, provided it is not a TracFone brand or service that may also show the same TFW indicator. Even in this scenario, you would replace the TFW label with a different carrier name, which will continue to be visible in the iPhone status bar.
Some Android phones may allow users to change the carrier name, allowing them to change the TFW ID to something else, but they will still be connected to one of TracFone’s wireless service providers.
Finally, iPhone and Android devices that support dual SIM connectivity will display the names of both carriers in Control Center or Quick Settings, respectively, provided that both SIM or eSIM cards are active on the device. In this case, you can customize which SIM card acts as the default number for calls and Internet use, but the operator names themselves will not be editable.
