In macOS 27 Golden Gate, Siri AI is much smarter than before, so it doesn’t always struggle and try to relay your questions to ChatGPT. However, if you still prefer OpenAI’s chatbot for certain queries, you can always explicitly request it.
In macOS Tahoe, Siri suggested forwarding a request to ChatGPT when it thought the chatbot could help. However, in macOS 27, ChatGPT only responds when you specifically ask it to. There’s also no setting that makes ChatGPT your default helper: as it stands, you have to choose it for each query. Here’s how to do it.
Activate the ChatGPT extension
- Open System Settings.
- Click Siri in the sidebar.
- Click ChatGPT under “Extension”.
- To light up Use the extension.
- Choose if you want to log in with a ChatGPT account.
If you log in, your requests are saved in your ChatGPT chat history (OpenAI privacy policies apply). If you skip logging in, OpenAI doesn’t receive anything related to your Apple account and can’t store your requests.
Ask ChatGPT in search or ask
- Press Order space to open the Search or ask bar (formerly Spotlight Search).
- Right-click (or Ctrl-click) the field.
- Choose Ask ➝ Using ChatGPT.
- Type your question, then press Enter.
When a response comes back, unless there are follow-up questions, the field will return to Siri AI for the next query. So if you want to use ChatGPT again, you will have to choose it manually next time.
Another way to query ChatGPT directly is to start your voice Siri query with “ask ChatGPT”. The same wording works if you enter it in the Search or Ask field.
ChatGPT is the only option at the moment in Golden Gate. Code in macOS 27 suggests Claude may appear in the same Ask menu, but Apple has not yet made AI provider selection available.
