This magnetic headphone amp puts a DAC (and a screen) on the back of your iPhone

If you’re serious about wired audio, there’s now a MagSafe headphone amp and digital-to-analog converter for iPhone.

MagDac adds not one but two audio jacks to your iPhone

The product comes from Fosi Audio, maker of more traditional iPhone DACs, and is called MD3 MagDac. You know, because it’s a portable magnetic DAC/headphone amplifier.

Naturally, it sports a 1.28-inch LCD screen on the back. The screen is capable of displaying photos, although it’s mostly a 100-step volume control.

It supports both unbalanced 3.5mm and balanced 4.4mm headphone outputs.

This is a powerful upgrade, even compared to iPhones from a previous decade with headphone jacks from the previous century.

Additionally, there is a USB-C port for charging the device while using it.

Honestly, the hardware looks pretty nice.

You just have to really like wired audio for it to make sense. It’s hard to compete with the convenience of wireless, but the MagDac is a great fit for the wired audio crowd.

It comes in two colors that match Fosi Audio’s wired headphones.

Fosi Audio says the new MD3 MagDac will launch later this month on May 25. You can register for availability here. The price should be around $150.

If you don’t need the MagSafe support and display feature, Fosi Audio has cheaper solutions already available.
