As graphics cards, or rather the processing chips within them, become more advanced, they consume more power. Higher power consumption also generates more heat, so they need larger fairings and thermal solutions to reduce it. The demand for better cooling is why they seem to grow larger over time and become heavier with each generation. This is concerning for a card that fits into a thin PCIe slot. Although the PC case itself supports the back of the card, nothing else holds it in place at the front. Enter GPU Sag Brackets: small support brackets that you can install under the card to instantly provide more stability and support, as well as stop any sagging.
Some PC owners get creative and use various items, whether 3D printed or already owned, like an action figure or model. It’s a viable solution if you have something ready to go, but GPU sag mounts aren’t expensive. You can find cheap options on Amazon for $4-$5. There are also many unique designs, such as additional RGB and temperature displays. Affordable or not, this doesn’t address the need for an anti-GPU sag tool. Are they practical? Is it bad for a GPU to sag?
Generally sag support is not necessary, but it also depends on the weight and size of your graphics card. If this card is heavy (around two pounds) and quite long, you can expect some sagging, which can be detrimental if left unchecked.
What Types of Problems Can GPU Sag Cause?
When a card sags, usually at the front, it pulls on the connector and distorts internal components, potentially affecting other areas of the computer, such as the motherboard or PCIe slot and their surrounding elements. Over time, this could potentially damage the PCIe slot, cause stability issues or reduce card performance, or even cause hardware failure. Even something as simple as disorienting the card and changing its balance can disrupt airflow inside the case, causing other cooling issues and higher temperatures. There are concrete cases where this happens; VideoCardz reported warnings from retailer PC One when this happened in a release. Eventually, your card may exhibit warning signs that it’s about to fail, such as graphical artifacts, crashes, temperature fluctuations, or worse.
Installing a sag bracket or other support element under the front edge of the board provides the much-needed stability to stay level and balanced. This is why enthusiasts install brackets or other elements, besides the fact that sometimes they just add an extra touch to a custom build. A small Iron Man figurine holding the card, a 3D printed toy or stand, or colorful stand-ins can sometimes match the aesthetic of the case and components very well.
You can also mount the GPU vertically in cases that allow it, rather than horizontally. The problem is that this isn’t always an option and may require additional hardware, such as a PCIe riser cable.
Sag support is not always necessary
Mid-sized boards and even some heavier models are already designed to naturally combat sagging. Card manufacturers calculate and distribute weight evenly across the card frame to improve support. They can also incorporate reinforced connection points (e.g. PCIe), lighter components and fans, or reduced dimensions where possible; the latter is especially true for budget options.
Some PC case manufacturers include matching brackets or stands as an additional feature, along with other add-ons. Obviously, if you have a case like that, you don’t need to purchase a stand separately. Additionally, some of the heavier cards requiring additional support already come in the box, so again, you don’t always need to purchase a separate option.
Best practice is to use a sagging bracket for heavy cards or long, extended cards with three fans. Usually, you can find the weight of the card in the product specifications or user manual. Almost anything with more than 12GB of RAM will be larger and have additional support, but not always. Some 12GB cards have only two fans and are compact. Ultimately, it may come down to preference, but when you’re dealing with something as expensive as a GPU and surrounding PC components like a motherboard, you might want to lean toward the “better safe than sorry” approach. With current shortages and price increases, it could be difficult to acquire a replacement if and when something untoward happens. If you need one, you don’t want to wait to buy a new graphics card for your computer. These prices won’t come down anytime soon, nor will the increased demand.
