Need to send an HDMI signal further than a single cable can handle? Try these options.
One of the most frustrating aspects of any entertainment setup is organizing your space. If you’re looking to transmit media signals across a large space, across multiple rooms, or even between floors, you may encounter the problem of signal degradation. Due to a phenomenon called attenuation, HDMI signals get weaker as they travel. This is especially noticeable if you’re running cables farther than 25 feet, with long-distance HDMI setups typically suffering from flickering or pixelation in images and audio loss. In some cases, your signal may drop completely.
Fortunately, most home setups can operate comfortably without any risk of signal loss by using shorter, high-quality cables. However, if you want to install multiple displays, hook up a TV on the back porch, or stream meetings between conference rooms, you’ll probably need to get creative with your HDMI cables to avoid degradation. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your home theater setup or link multiple desks together, you can solve these problems with a series of inexpensive, easy-to-assemble HDMI accessories.
Use an HDMI coupler to expand your setup
Let’s start with HDMI couplers, which expand your setup by connecting two HDMI cables together. These adapters look like a small box with two HDMI ports, or “female” jacks, on each end. To use a coupler, plug the “male” connector ends of two HDMI cables into the female jacks on the device. Once connected, the HDMI coupler transmits your signal seamlessly from one cord to the other.
HDMI couplers extend the range of your HDMI connection without much data loss. They’re cheaper than most long-haul cables, and many support 8K video and up to 48 Gbps of bandwidth, roughly the same specs as HDMI 2.1. This option has been a godsend for my family’s outdoor movie nights when I needed to extend my outdoor projector’s HDMI connection.
Unfortunately, couplers are not foolproof. Since HDMI signals weaken the further they travel, relying on a coupler to relay a string of HDMI cables beyond 25 feet can still result in signal degradation. Replacing older HDMI cables with newer ultra-high speed alternatives can create additional problems because newer cable standards have a shorter effective length and the coupler must support the newer standard. So, an HDMI coupler may be impractical if you prioritize maximum speed and quality.
HDMI signal repeaters
If you want to extend your signal beyond the range of a coupler, you may want to invest in a signal repeater. Like a coupler, a repeater is a small box with two female HDMI ports that you use to connect two cables together. However, rather than simply transmitting the same signal to the next cable, the repeater updates the signal. In fact, it is as if the signal was recreated.
A typical repeater can extend an HDMI signal up to about 100 feet. And while long strings may not be aesthetically pleasing, connecting multiple HDMI cables together via repeaters can boost the HDMI signal in an office, classroom, or outdoor patio.
The biggest drawback is the price. Although a single repeater can cost as little as $20, stringing together several can quickly add to the cost of your installation. So while one repeater isn’t ideal if you need to connect multiple rooms, using two or three repeaters could still reduce your total expenses compared to more advanced accessories.
Switching to active cables
Unfortunately, the latest HDMI cables are more susceptible to signal degradation, with many seeing signal attenuation after 9 feet. One solution is to switch to an active cable, which contains small chips in the wiring to amplify the signal.
There are two main forms of active HDMI cables: copper and fiber optic. The former use signal repeaters in the wiring to carry signals, sometimes reaching more than 100 feet. Fiber optic cables, on the other hand, contain thin glass fibers that transmit signals via pulses of light, similar to what your ISP may provide for home Internet. Fiber optic HDMI cables are ideal for transmitting signals in large spaces, some reaching over 300 feet.
One downside is that you have to be more intentional in setting up your display. While passive cables can send signals in both directions, active cables can only carry signals unidirectionally. Additionally, active cables are not compatible with all devices. Since some ultra-high-speed cables contain their own internal power system, you’ll need to confirm that your device supports power over HDMI cable before investing in an active HDMI option.
Another disadvantage is the cost. Copper cables can cost anywhere from $35 to $80, depending on the length and brand. Fiber optic cables, on the other hand, can cost between $40 and $120. And while most situations don’t warrant fancy HDMI prices, investing in an active cable can save you from purchasing an ever-growing pile of additional accessories.
Using a Wireless HDMI Extender
You should consider a wireless repeater if you need to extend your HDMI connection across multiple rooms or floors. Also called video transmitters, these devices are ideal for businesses or homes needing multi-room transmissions.
Wireless extenders consist of two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter, which you plug directly into your device, converts the HDMI stream into a wireless signal. This signal is picked up by the receiver that you plug into your screen. Some receivers can even accommodate multiple HDMI connections, which is ideal in environments where multiple people need to stream to a single screen. Extension cord ranges can vary greatly, with some models extending feeds more than 1,300 feet.
Unfortunately, HDMI transmitters are not a one-size-fits-all solution. They can experience a slight delay, which means they’re not ideal for streaming live sports or playing PC games on the TV in another room. Although some can transmit 4K resolution, the transmitters are not able to achieve high dynamic range video.
Prices vary depending on range, resolution and brand. On Amazon, wireless extenders cost between $45 and $190. Be sure to check the accessory’s latency stats and refresh rates if you plan to watch something at a fast pace.
Connect your HDMI signal to Ethernet
You can also use an Ethernet connection to extend your HDMI signal by several hundred feet. Ideal for home theaters, multi-room displays, and entertainment environments, Ethernet HDMI setups allow you to connect large spaces without losing signal quality.
Although the setup is more intensive than many of the solutions above, extending your HDMI signal via Ethernet cables is still relatively simple. Typically, extenders consist of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter, which you connect to your output device, captures your signal and transforms it into a signal that an Ethernet cable can carry. The receiver, in turn, connects to your screen and streams content via its HDMI input. For the most part, all you need is a standard HDMI cable and compatible Ethernet cables, probably CAT5e, CAT6 or CAT6a.
As it stands, there are two main types of HDMI to Ethernet connections. The first converts your HDMI data into a network signal carried over long distances with a dedicated Ethernet cable (ideal for more intensive streams). For a more premium experience, you can opt for an IP extender, which converts your HDMI input into an Internet Protocol signal transmitted over your home network like all other traffic.
Those who want to stream to multiple displays can invest in a dual-use extender over Ethernet. Also functioning as a splitter, these extenders allow you to transmit your stream to multiple receivers without loss of signal quality. Although more expensive, multi-monitor extenders can expand your media options with fewer additional units.
