This date is no secret, as most smartphone vendors have specific support timelines for their handsets, depending on various factors, including market and device type. These dates are usually public, as vendors typically reveal how many years of software updates a device is expected to receive. With this in mind, Motorola handset owners should be aware that various popular Motorola handsets are expected to lose software support by the end of 2026 or no longer receive updates earlier in the year.
The number of Motorola devices is large and includes entry-level, mid-range and high-end devices. Some of these handsets will lose software support in August or September, while others will reach end-of-life in December. A phone that doesn’t receive the latest updates may pose an increased security risk, potentially exposing users to data breaches. It’s not about the lack of support for major Android releases and new features, but rather the security updates that Google and smartphone vendors release periodically to fix newly discovered vulnerabilities in the phone’s software that hackers can exploit. For example, an Android phone that will not receive additional major Android updates but will be supported for security updates is more secure than a phone that stops receiving updates altogether.
In addition to the models mentioned above, several other Motorola handsets have reached their end-of-life date earlier in 2026, as follows:

Other unofficial and custom Android versions also exist, and they may offer additional years of Android and software support. However, the process of installing custom Android builds may be more difficult for some owners. Additionally, any Motorola phones that lose official software update support will not be supported by Android custom ROM developers.
Which Motorola phone to buy in 2026?
Motorola phones that have lost or are about to lose software support in 2026 have been supported for between two and four years, as noted above. Many of these devices are likely usable, and it’s likely that newer phones, such as Motorola phones released in 2024, still have good batteries. Additionally, Motorola owners say the devices typically last three to four years. In other words, owners might want to keep some of these devices for an extra year or even longer, especially if they’re tech-savvy enough to stay away from questionable apps and websites after the security update support period expires. But security risks remain, as new software vulnerabilities will not be patched.
Some Motorola handset owners may want to upgrade to a relatively new Motorola smartphone that offers better software warranties than the models above. The good news is that Motorola has launched new devices in recent years that will be supported for seven years. Some Motorola models sold in the European Union also require support for at least five years, according to local laws.
For example, the entry-level Moto G75 5G device was launched in October 2024 and will receive security updates until October 2030. The mid-range Motorola Edge 70 Fusion+, launched in February 2026, could be an even better proposition, as it is expected to receive its final security updates in November 2031. The flagship Motorola Signature, launched in January 2026, will receive security updates until June 2032. Additionally, Google and Samsung offer some of the best software warranties in the industry, supporting Pixel and select Galaxy devices for up to seven years of Android versions and seven years of security updates.
