The Outsiders celebrates Apple Design Awards nomination with huge update

Just days after being nominated for a 2026 Apple Design Award in the Interaction category, The Outsiders rolled out a major update with home screen widgets, expanded workout import options, new metrics, additional workout types, and more. Here are the details.

The Outsiders receives its biggest update since launch

Version 1.7 of Outsiders arrived on the App Store today, hot on the heels of a nomination for the 2026 Apple Design Awards in the Interaction category, a feat for an application released barely 8 months ago.

To say the nomination is well deserved is an understatement. Since its release, the Gentler Stories team has updated the app to make it even more powerful, more flexible, and more useful for users whose workout routine extends beyond casual exercise.

Today, The Outsiders receives its biggest update since launch, with several welcome additions, including many of the features users have requested most.

This includes home screen widgets, “the number one request since launch,” according to Andrej Mihelic, co-founder and product designer of Gentler Stories.

Now, The Outsiders users can quickly check “training readiness, training load rate, physical endurance and health metrics” directly from their home screen, with one or more layouts.

Another highly requested addition is the ability to import workouts beyond the Apple Watch. With today’s update, Garmin workouts can now be automatically imported into The Outsiders, while manual imports are supported for workouts from Zwift, Wahoo, COROS, Karoo, Amazfit, and any other platform that can export .FIT files to Apple Health.

The Outsiders now supports 161 workout types, with the full package now including “Dog Running, Kettlebell Training, Tethered Swimming, Gravel Ride, Outdoor Hand Cycling, Bouldering, Windsurfing, Beach Volleyball, Inline Hockey, Surfskating, BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing,” in addition to Furniture Assembly, “probably the most in demand,” the press release states.

These new types of training come with a new metric: the number of sessions, with support for both progression and workouts. It also includes four new states: Active Recovery, Paused, Injured, and Sick, for users who need a break.

On the other end of the spectrum, version 1.7 of The Outsiders now allows users to switch from “Training Load Report” to “Training Form”. Here are some gentler stories about what it means and who it’s for:

For those preparing for a race or peak effort, you can now switch from training load ratio to training form. Training Form shows where fitness and freshness meet, and when the balance is perfect, you’re ready to perform.

This is a more focused view of the part of training that involves marking a specific day on the calendar, rather than maintaining it over time.

Finally, the update includes a new UI for body measurements that opens as individual cards, a map view for photos taken during a workout, and several new icons to further personalize the app.

The Outsiders is available for free on the App Store, with monthly, yearly, and lifetime subscription options to unlock all of its features.
