The OpenAI Codex now works in Chrome with a new extension

OpenAI today launched Codex for Chrome, a Chrome extension that allows Codex to work directly in the browser on Mac and PC.

With the extension, Codex can use the browser to test web applications, get context across multiple tabs, use web development tools, and more. without taking over the user’s browser.

OpenAI says that after launching Computer Use in the Codex desktop app, it found that the most common workflows took place in the browser. The Chrome extension should allow Codex to make browser-based work easier and faster than plugins or APIs can’t handle.

According to OpenAI, Codex has more than 4 million weekly active users, an 8-fold increase since the start of the year. The Chrome extension is part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to make the Codex more useful for users’ daily work, while still keeping it useful for developers.

The Chrome extension can be installed via the Codex Plugins menu.
