The first iPod touch went on sale on September 14, 2007, nine days after Steve Jobs unveiled it at Apple’s “The Beat Goes On” media event. The device introduced the iPhone’s multi-touch interface, Wi-Fi and Safari browser to the iPod line for the first time, but it lacked cell phone features and a camera.
The iPod touch launched at $299 for 8 GB and $399 for 16 GB, and was introduced as a pocket-sized way to browse the web and purchase music wirelessly through the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. It lasted for seven generations, before Apple discontinued it in 2022.
