The biggest iPhone Ultra mystery that’s influencing my upgrade decision

iPhone Ultra rumors are readily available and offer a strong consensus on what’s in store for Apple’s foldable model. But as I’ve weighed my own upgrade decision this year, there’s one big question that probably won’t be answered until September: Will the new form factor be worth it?

Will the iPhone Ultra’s form factor be compelling enough to overcome its compromises?

Now that the iPhone Ultra is only a few months away, I’ve been thinking about my decision to upgrade this year.

And no matter how many specs, features, and other product details I learn, I’m still not entirely convinced that this is the right model for me. The biggest unknown is the form factor itself and whether the Ultra’s compromises will be worth it.

It’s a question raised by leaks showing a very unique design with the iPhone Ultra.

Its exterior screen will be significantly shorter and wider than what we are used to on the iPhone. And its interior screen will look more like an iPad.

The iPhone Ultra will be the first-ever major form factor change for the iPhone. And as such, it could be taking the risk of fixing something that isn’t broken.

But it’s not just the unusual design: the iPhone Ultra will also have feature compromises.

Apple’s high-end model will not have a telephoto lens or Face ID. And with its titanium design and lack of a vapor chamber, it can be prone to overheating, unlike the Pro models.

With iPhone 18 Pro, you get the same great iPhone experience as always, but with improved performance, cameras, battery life, and more. Essentially, it’s the iPhone you know and love, but better.

With the iPhone Ultra, it’s not at all the iPhone you know and love. It’s something unique. It’s exciting, but it also won’t be for everyone.

iPhone Ultra Upgrade Decision: Recap

I admit that I have never used a foldable smartphone. I know a lot of people like the form factor, so I tend to think foldables have a bright future. But I also know how much the iPhone’s proven design is loved by users, including me.

Perhaps the experience of using the iPhone Ultra will make the product’s drawbacks inconsequential. But until Apple gives its official pitch and we have the first contacts, I don’t yet know which new iPhone will suit me best.
