Roku announced today that its home screen is getting its biggest overhaul in over a decade. The new home screen will roll out to Roku TVs and streaming devices in the US starting today, with other countries to follow later. Changes will appear automatically, with no software updates required.
At the top of the Home screen, a new “Top Picks for You” section provides recommendations based on your viewing history and trends on Roku.
A new AI-powered “Quick Access” section showcases the apps you use most, such as the Apple TV app. There’s always a separate page with a full list of apps you have installed on your Roku device if you need it.
New hubs called “Destinations” offer content organized by genres and moods, such as comedy, reality TV, films, sports, documentaries, etc.
Roku’s home screen menu now features a collapsed design with icons, rather than expanded text labels. Roku says this change provides a cleaner canvas for discovering content, but it also results in a large ad being persistently displayed on the right side of the screen. Previously, the ad only appeared in certain views.
A new “Shortcuts” section provides quick access to features like Continue Watching, Sleep Timer, Save List and more, all in one place.
If you’re a fan of the Roku City screensaver, there’s now an on-screen tile you can select to display at any time. You can explore the screensaver’s iconic cityscape, as well as access Daily Trivia and other mini-games.
