Thanks to upcoming European regulations, the next Apple Pencil could feature replaceable batteries.
It’s been almost three years since Apple introduced its updated stylus with a USB-C port and two years since the more premium Apple Pencil Pro. According to BloombergAccording to Mark Gurman, Apple has two new Apple Pencil models in store for the first half of 2027, to accompany the expected release of its updated iPad models.
Gurman reported that one model, codenamed B582, would be an update to the entry-level Apple Pencil that charges with a USB-C port. The second refresh, currently named B632, will refresh the Apple Pencil Pro. While the existing Apple Pencil Pro model introduced a new sensor capable of detecting a user pressing down on the barrel, Gurman said the upcoming design could see some improvements in terms of repairability. According to Gurman, Apple is working hard to comply with new European Union regulations calling for more easily replaceable batteries in consumer electronics devices, which could lead to more repairable Apple Pencil models.
For Apple customers, this would be a welcome change since iFixit has deemed all Apple Pencil models to “fail in repairability” due to the inability to replace internal batteries after they die. This wouldn’t be the first time that European Union regulations have impacted Apple product design, given the significant shift to USB-C with the iPhone 15 lineup.
