Those who purchased the first version of Prologue: Go Wayback! could get a refund.
Brendan Greene and his studio PlayerUnknown Productions have just announced a downsizing effort. It’s the developer behind the megahit Battle Royale. PUBG. The company lays off an unspecified number of employees and cancels development of one title, the survival roguelike. Prologue: Flashback.
An early access version of this title has been available on Steam and Epic Games Store since last year for $20. Greene says he’s “looking into” ways players can get refunds. This early access version will remain available and will now be free.
The developer says this is all in response to the expense of developing its internal Melba terrain generation engine. The company will continue to manufacture this technology, but with a smaller team. Melba was used to create cards for Prologue: Flashback. It’s also supposed to be a core part of an upcoming massive multiplayer game called Artemis. We don’t know where the development is on this.
PUBG was first released in 2017 and Greene left parent company Krafton to form PlayerUnknown Productions in 2021. The company recently released a tech demo called Preface: An unknown world which uses Melba and allows people to explore an “Earth-scale world generated in real time”.
