Not dead yet: Apple Vision still has a future

As we’ve said before, and a new report reiterates, the supposed death of Apple Vision Pro and its product team was an exaggeration. There are no signs of “discontinuation” on the product line.

A report based on an anonymous leak of limited scope concluded that Apple Vision Pro had become a discontinued product line. Even though the core team has changed or evolved, the project itself has not been abandoned.

woozadThe company’s initial assessment of the situation has been reiterated by other knowledgeable individuals, including in the latest report. According to the To light up bulletin. Although the Vision Products group was divided into various other organizations, the development of Apple Vision Pro did not stop.

In fact, a report from John Gruber suggests that the Vision Products Group still exists in some form at Apple. This is a direct contradiction of Mark Gurman’s reporting, but there is probably a simple explanation.

In any case, as Gruber points out, the Vision Pro Group is not going to learn of its dissolution through a rumor spread by an Internet site. Rather, the world would learn about it via a leak of the general meeting that made the announcement, as with Apple Car.

Assemble the pieces

While we’ll probably never know the whole story, here’s what appears to have happened based on all the details so far.

  • A special projects group is formed in 2016, led by Mike Rockwell, to develop augmented reality products
  • Vision Products Group detailed in July 2023 after Apple Vision Pro reveal
  • Apple Vision Pro releases in February 2024 and sells around 600,000 units in the first year
  • John Giannandrea is replaced by Mike Rockwell after the apparently successful development and launch of Apple Vision Pro
  • Mike Rockwell is poaching several executives and engineers from Vision Products Group, but it is not reported to be entirely disbanded at this point.
  • An Apple Vision Pro with M5 is launching in October 2025, which will likely keep the chipset modern and produce something like new.
  • On April 15, 2026, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s chief marketing officer, said that Apple Vision Pro is a glimpse into the future, but it’s hard to say exactly when spatial computing will take over.
  • On April 29, rumors suggested that Apple had discontinued Apple Vision Pro and that the entire Vision Products group had been disbanded.

We now return to today where we know that the Vision Products group was not entirely dissolved. Active members of the team would have been taken aback by this news.

I think the reason we’ve seen conflicting reports here is because of how Apple is structured internally. It doesn’t tend to create special teams, with Vision Products Group and Apple Car Project Titan being notable exceptions.

So, as it becomes clear that a new, advanced headset won’t be possible in the near term, Apple has begun siphoning off its best talent to other, more urgent divisions.

This does not mean that Vision Products Group is gone. In fact, they are probably the ones developing the legendary Apple Glass which will be the full AR glasses of the future.

The fact is that neither a lighter Vision Pro nor Apple Glass is possible today. It’s possible that this anonymous leak came from a team member who was emotional and upset about the change.

In any case, visionOS 27 will arrive during WWDC 2026 on June 8 with some improvements in place. Those with an Apple Vision Pro shouldn’t worry that their device will suddenly stop being supported by Apple.
