Last March, OpenAI abruptly pulled the plug on its Sora video application. Two months later, two AI video generation apps are vying for the top spot in the App Store.
Sora wasn’t the only AI video generation technology
OpenAI abandoned Sora largely due to the cost of running the AI video generation service.
The service was resource intensive and free for users. Instead, OpenAI focuses on ChatGPT and Codex to improve productivity. Codex in particular works best with paid plans.
With Sora out of the way, competing AI applications have pushed video generation capabilities to the fore.
For example, Gemini and Grok support transforming text and image prompts into AI-generated video.
But AI video generation is just a feature of these general AI chatbot applications.
More recently, two apps dedicated to AI video generation have climbed the App Store rankings.
Two Seemingly Random AI Video Creation Apps Climb App Store Rankings
The first is Kling AI. It has been on the App Store for three months and this week it is ranked #5 in the App Store’s most downloaded free apps.
Kling AI also benefits from being the #1 app in the Graphics & Design category.
The second is simply called AI Video from developer HUBX, which has 15 AI-focused apps on the App Store. The app ranks #6 and specifically targets users who want to create viral AI videos.
HUBX’s AI Video app currently holds the top spot in the App Store’s Photo & Video category.

For now, the only applications ahead of these come from large companies: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta.
Sora, of course, was placed at the top of the App Store when it was introduced. But the app wasn’t working well after a few months.
This pair of apps appears to be benefiting from a new moment where the AI video generation is capturing the attention of iPhone users. It remains to be seen whether this is a new fashion or a lasting trend.
