MacBook Pro OLED display production overcomes major hurdle

Apple’s first OLED MacBook Pro models have overcome a major manufacturing hurdle, with panel supplier Samsung Display reportedly achieving yields above 90% on its Gen 8.6 OLED production line.

According to a Korean publication The Electsome individual steps in the process now achieve yields of up to 95 percent, a level that the display industry considers “golden yield” territory for stable mass production.

The report indicates that Samsung could start shipping OLED panels for laptops through the supply chain as early as June. The panels are expected to be used in future 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with supply volumes estimated at around 2 million units this year.

The rapid improvement in yield is notable because OLED panels for laptops are much more difficult to manufacture than smartphone displays due to their larger size and stricter requirements for brightness and lifespan. For example, the MacBook Pro’s panels are expected to use brighter dual-battery tandem OLED technology like Apple’s iPad Pro OLED models, oxide TFT backplanes for improved battery life, and a moisture-proofing method called hybrid encapsulation.

Samsung began its investment in generation 8.6 IT OLED in 2023 and is currently operating one of two planned production lines. Depending on demand for OLED MacBook Pro models, which would have touchscreen capability for the first time, Samsung could activate the second line and expand the capacity further.

BloombergMark Gurman has repeatedly said that the 14- and 16-inch OLED MacBook Pro models are expected to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, but the latter period is now more likely due to the industry-wide chip shortage.
