Leaker: this is why Apple is delaying the launch of the iPhone 18

Apple proactively chose to delay the launch of the standard iPhone 18 as part of a deliberate market strategy, claims the leak known as “Fixed Focus Digital,” with the move intended to extend the iPhone 17 sales window while reducing production costs and improving Apple’s competitive position against its Android rivals.

In two new posts on Weibo, Fixed Focus Digital said that a move to the standard ‌iPhone 18‌ model was largely inevitable due to global supply chain shortages, and that Apple made a deliberate choice to delay the device rather than rush it to market.

By extending the ‌iPhone 17‌ production cycle and launching a large-scale manufacturing ramp, Apple would use the additional time to allow the ‌iPhone 17‌ to consolidate its market share at the consumer price level before the arrival of its downgraded successor. The leaker said Apple had targeted enough supply of the ‌iPhone 17‌ to participate in the Double 11 sales event in China later this year. Double 11, also known as Singles’ Day, is one of the world’s largest annual retail events and an important battleground for China’s smartphone market share.

The leaker touted this approach as a “remarkably clever market adjustment mechanism,” suggesting that shipping a lower-quality “iPhone 18” will be easier to absorb commercially if it arrives around 18 months after the “iPhone 17,” by which time the previous generation will have already dominated the consumer level for an extended period. Fixed Focus Digital described the strategy as simultaneously reducing production costs and increasing market share compared to Android competitors.

The messages add a strategic dimension to what has become a series of rumors about the device being decommissioned. The leaker first reported that Apple was implementing some manufacturing downgrades of the ‌iPhone 18‌ as a cost-cutting measure, before adding that the display specs and chip would both be affected. Apple may consider changing the name of the A-series chip used in the device to hide the extent of the chip change. Technical validation testing of the ‌iPhone 18‌ and iPhone 18e will reportedly take place simultaneously in June, consistent with the idea that the two devices now share significant technical overlap.

Most recently, the leaker said that some parts were interchangeable between the ‌iPhone 18‌ and the cheaper iPhone 18e, indicating that some convergence of specifications between the two devices is real and measurable at the supply chain level. “Believe me: the standard ‌iPhone 18‌ model has been downgraded and its launch delayed – this decision is final and will not change,” they added.

The iPhone 18‌, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are all expected to launch in spring 2027, while the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max, and foldable iPhone Ultra are expected in fall 2026. A split launch strategy separating the Pro and standard models has been widely reported since last year, with Ming-Chi Kuo and Nikkei among those who corroborated the plan.
