We’re less than a month away from the premiere of a brand new show in the Avatar -verse, set 12 years later. The Legend of Korra has finished its race. Avatar: Seven Havens begins streaming via Paramount+ on October 9 and we finally have a real beefy trailer to get us pumped.
We got some images in July, but they were more of a teaser. That’s almost three minutes of the series, with character voices and plenty of clues about where the story is going. The animation is also very pretty, which is typical of the franchise.
The story seems imbued with a post-apocalyptic flavor. Something bad happened after the events of The Legend of Korra and the world is in ruins, forcing survivors to retreat to the titular seven refuges. In fact, Korra is blamed for these events (which is on brand), so public opinion has shifted negatively towards the whole concept of Avatars.
Enter Avatar Pavi, a young girl who will likely have to go on the run once people find out her identity. She has a twin sister, who might pull off some wild shenanigans in the spirit world. Just like the other shows, she has a group of friends who (hopefully) support her.
For the uninitiated, this franchise started with Avatar: The Last Airbender more than 20 years ago. Each of the following shows presents a new avatar, after the death of the previous one. It’s a Dalai Lama type thing, but with superpowers based on the elements.
The Legend of Korra was set 70 years after the first. The showrunners of Seven Havensincluding franchise co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino, recently confirmed to Polygon that this takes place 200 years later Korra. This probably means we won’t have older support releases Korra characters, like the evil grandmother Toph and the old man Zuko in this series. How did Korra live this long? We will know, although it is not uncommon in history.
The first three episodes release on October 9, with the series following a weekly release schedule thereafter. It has already been renewed, so two seasons of 13 episodes are coming.
This year has been busy for the franchise. We just got a movie that follows the adult version of Avatar Aang. It was pretty awesome, even though it was fully leaked online months before its release. The second season of the live-action Netflix series also dropped earlier this year, with a third and final on the way.
