A PlayStation 5 retail box isn’t the smallest package, measuring around 18.5 x 17 x 7 inches for a standard edition. They therefore take up enough space in your living room and are difficult to place on a shelf. And as with any consumer electronics device, keeping the original manufacturer’s box for your PlayStation 5 can add resale value if you want to auction it or sell it at a marketplace.
Demand for used PlayStation 5 increased by more than 93% after Sony’s global price hike in April 2026. Plus, with no sign of the PlayStation 6 arriving soon, people might be willing to grit their teeth and buy a Sony console before waiting for the PS 6. On eBay, prices are mixed, although one listing is selling a complete set of an 825GB Sony PlayStation 5 home console with a controller, stand and cables (CFI-1015A) for $525; a similar package without the box cost $391. While this doesn’t prove the box is worth that premium for a used console, the presentation could still attract potential buyers.
Also considering data from older consoles like the rare edition Nintendo GameCube, the Panasonic Q GameCube sells for $1,654 without the box, but will sell for $2,200 if the box is included. This is just one example of how an aged collectible can increase in value. And of course, for a Sony PlayStation, a built-in disc edition could be considered a lucrative item to own if the future of the PlayStation becomes entirely discless.
Is it still worth buying a PS5 in 2026?
The real question is whether keeping the PlayStation 5 retail box is worth selling it online, depending on whether people still think buying a PlayStation 5 is worth it. The answer isn’t black and white until Sony has more information about the PlayStation 6, like what the final price might be – one industry prediction suggests it could be priced at $1,000 – but no one knows until the company announces it. Some even think it could be more of a handheld, or both, which could open up a whole new market.
Then there are competitors like Nintendo, Valve, and Microsoft that offer compelling gaming options for the living room. However, if nothing else, the PlayStation 5 dominated the console market with its high-fidelity visuals and consistent performance, even with AAA titles (especially on the Pro model). Finally, it also helps that Sony’s history of supporting last gen years in the next gen cycle is pretty well established. So in reality, it’s still a decent purchase – it’s just that people are more worried about the expense of buying on a tight household budget. But this is also where the second-hand market could hold great potential, targeting the budget-conscious consumer.
