While the long-awaited foldable iPhone has often been referred to as iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold in rumors, another name doing the rounds is the iPhone Duo.
There’s no real evidence that Apple will use the iPhone Duo name, but it’s certainly a possibility. Apple has used the Duo brand in the past, for its PowerBook Duo line of laptops in the 1990s and for its MagSafe Duo charger in the early 2020s.
In this case, Duo would refer to the dual screens of the foldable iPhone.
Microsoft launched a dual-screen Android smartphone called Surface Duo in 2020, which has since been discontinued, and perhaps Apple will want to avoid using the Duo branding for this reason. However, competing companies also offer devices branded as Ultra and Fold, such as the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Apple used the Ultra branding for the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra and its M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra and M5 Ultra chips.
In April, the former Macmonde Journalist Filipe Espósito cited a source close to Apple’s plans as saying that the foldable iPhone would indeed be called iPhone Ultra. BloombergApple’s Mark Gurman said that many Apple employees call the device iPhone Ultra within the company, but he never clearly announced that that would be the official name.
Apple is expected to unveil its foldable iPhone at its event next week, so we’ll soon find out whether the device is called iPhone Ultra, iPhone Fold, iPhone Duo, or something else. Share your own guesses in the comments section.
