iOS 27: Seven new features announced next month

Apple will unveil iOS 27 next month on June 8 at the WWDC kickoff. Here are seven new iPhone features expected to arrive in iOS 27.

#1: New Siri with standalone app, chatbot features, and more

Siri is expected to be a major focus of iOS 27, with a total AI overhaul for Apple’s assistant.

The upgraded Siri is rumored to offer many new upgrades, including:

  • standalone Siri app for iPhone
  • Chatbot-style interface like ChatGPT and Gemini
  • knowledge of the world with the LLM foundation
  • new design linked to Dynamic Island
  • perform multiple actions with a single query
  • integrations with more third-party AI agents
  • Personal context, screen awareness, and app intent features that were previously delayed
  • System-wide “Ask Siri” buttons

If Apple can deliver on all that has been said, the new Siri will be a huge improvement that will mark a new chapter in the company’s AI history.

Apple iOS 26 Photos app

Apple’s Photos app will reportedly get three new AI-powered editing tools in iOS 27: extend, enhance, and crop.

  • Extend: “allows users to generate additional image content beyond the original frame”
  • Enhance: “uses AI to automatically improve color, lighting and overall image quality”
  • Cropping: “designed primarily for spatial photos…allows users to change perspective after the photo is taken”

It’s possible that the current Clean Up feature will also be improved thanks to Apple’s new partnership with Google for Gemini technology.

#3: Camera app adds visual intelligence features

Apple launched Visual Intelligence in iOS 18, linked to iPhone 16 camera control.

But visual intelligence would expand with new features in iOS 27 and be integrated into the Camera app.

In the Camera app, there will be a new “Siri” mode that joins existing options like “Photo” and “Video.” Opening Siri Mode will provide all existing visual intelligence features, plus a few new ones.

By Mark Gurman at Bloomberg:

Beyond the in-camera integration, Apple is expanding the functionality with additional internal features. This includes the ability to scan a nutrition label on food packaging to record dietary information. Users will also be able to capture and add coordinates directly from what the camera sees.

#4: Apple Wallet will allow you to “Create a pass”

Apple’s Wallet app just keeps getting better, with several new and upcoming improvements. And in iOS 27, a new feature arrives that should expand its usefulness even further.

Bloomberg reports that a new “Create a Pass” feature is coming, allowing you to store even more of the important tickets and passes in your life in Apple Wallet. By Mark Gurman:

Users can create a pass from scratch or rely on the iPhone’s camera to take a QR code and turn it into a digital ticket. The feature includes tools for customizing styles, images, colors and text fields, allowing users to tailor the information displayed on each pass.

Apple is testing three model options: standard, membership, and event. Standard, in orange, is a default option for any pass type, while Membership, in blue, is for entry to places like gyms. The event pass, in purple, is for tickets to games, movies and other occasions.

#5: Apple Health Upgrades

Apple Health offers a variety of upgrades in iOS 27, including new features that were previously tied to a planned subscription service.

Reports indicate that Apple had created an “Apple Health+” service, but Eddy Cue decided to pivot and release its new features for free in the Health app.

New Health features expected in iOS 27 include:

  • educational videos created by doctors and health experts
  • AI-powered coaching and wellness suggestions
  • more robust nutritional monitoring

Tim Cook has long predicted that health will be Apple’s biggest contribution to the world, and iOS 27 could contribute to that goal.

#6: Autocorrect Extension for iOS 27 Keyboard

Autocorrect could benefit from an important new feature in iOS 27: alternative word suggestions.

By BloombergApple is working on an autocorrect change that could resemble tools like Grammarly. In addition to simply correcting misspelled words, the new keyboard can offer alternative word suggestions.

It’s unclear whether this new feature will be AI-powered or not, but it seems likely.

#7: Safari will be able to automatically name tab groups

SafariiOS 26

If you use Safari’s Tab Groups feature, iOS 27 may be able to start automatically naming your different tab groups through Apple Intelligence.

In the same way that Apple currently uses AI to create custom podcast chapters in Apple Podcasts and generate new reminders sections in your lists to organize tasks, iOS 27 would be able to automatically name your tab groups based on their content.

This is probably an optional feature, but it could be a handy addition to keep your tab groups organized.
