iOS 27 brings new features to two of the most popular iPhone apps

The iOS 27 unveiling is only a few weeks away, and rumors about new features continue to pour in. Here are rumors of upcoming iOS 27 upgrades for two of the most popular iPhone apps: Camera and Photos.

Camera app adding new Siri mode with visual intelligence

The Camera app on iPhone is rumored to add a whole new “Siri” mode in iOS 27.

Joining existing modes such as Photo, Video, Portrait and Pano, Siri Mode will integrate Apple’s visual intelligence features into the native Camera app.

Currently, Visual Intelligence is an entirely separate feature in iOS. You access it by long-pressing the iPhone’s camera control or adding a launcher to the Control Center or your lock screen.

Visual intelligence lets you use AI to gain insights into everything you look at. And in addition to the Camera app integration, at least two new features are coming for this feature.

By BloombergThe camera’s Siri mode will allow you to scan nutrition labels to quickly and easily save food information in Apple’s Health app. And it is also possible to scan a business card to add its details to the Contacts app.

Apple’s Photos app is rumored to add three new AI-powered image editing features. By Mark Gurman:

  • Extend: “allows users to generate additional image content beyond the original frame. For example, someone could take a close-up photo of a landmark and use the tool to fill in the surrounding landscape.”
  • Enhance: “uses AI to automatically improve color, lighting, and overall image quality.”
  • Crop: “designed primarily for spatial photos… allows users to change perspective after the photo is taken. A photo of a car, for example, could be adjusted from a front view to emphasize the side.”

These features join the existing cleaning functionality added in iOS 18. They are all expected to be powered by the new Google Gemini offshoot of the Apple Foundation models.

Additionally, a leak last year indicated that the Photos app would get features to improve Collections in iOS 27. No further details were shared, but perhaps bigger changes to Photos are coming.

What new features do you hope to see iOS 27 bring for camera and photos? Let us know in the comments.
